The purpose of online penny auctions is to buy the items you wish for as cheaply as possible. There needs to be a bit of caution upon your behalf, however, as bidding can give the penny auction sites a huge profit, while the majority of bidders actually lose money when they buy an item. This is because the main premise of penny auctions is that you pay for the bids you use ahead of time. Since you pay between $0.50 and $1.00 for each bid ahead of time, the penny auction sites make an immediate profit off of you. And because these are paid for ahead of time, it is easier to use them than if you actually paid for each bid as you used it. This gives the penny auction sites a small advantage immediately.

Suppose you buy 1,000 bids for $500. This equals $0.50 per bid. If you spend 200 bids to buy $200 worth of goods, you have, in theory, saved $100. The sites make up this $100 with the losing bids of others. Since only one person can win each auction, the vast majority of penny auction bidders are losing money. This means that if you want to be a profitable penny auction bidder, you need to have a winning strategy. You don’t need to win every auction, or even a majority of the auctions you enter. You simply need to know when you are going to be bidding many times on a single item and try to minimize these losses. Like any game that involves money management, you want to minimize your expenses and losses by cutting ties with an auction if you feel there is going to be heavy bidding.

Any game that has a modicum of reliance upon luck is accompanied by variance. In all games where there is both an element of luck and skill, the goal is to master the skill portion of the game as completely as possible as this will help reduce the amount of luck that goes into it as well. To illustrate this point, let’s look at an example at Bodog.com.

If you have a fair coin, the probability of landing heads versus tails is 1:1. Suppose you have to pay $1 to a friend every time it lands heads, and he pays you $1 every time it lands tails. Over an infinite number of samples, the ratio will remain 1:1. However, in the short term, this is not the case. It is not uncommon for you to be on the losing end of things 4 or 5 times in a row.

Poker is not a coin flip; there are many more variables that go into a round of poker. In Texas Hold ‘Em, you are dealt 2 cards, but you do not know the order of the 50 remaining cards. By calculating what the odds of a particular card coming up, you can help to eliminate the inherent variance by adjusting your play appropriately. For example, you are dealt and ace and a king of hearts. You have 2 of the 13 hearts in your hand, leaving 11 hearts in the deck. If the flop gives you two more hearts and a spade, you now know that there are 9 hearts remaining of the 47 cards left to be seen. In other words, your odds of hitting a heart on the turn are 9:47, or about 1:5.2. By adjusting your bets to account for the true odds of a hand’s outcome, you are adjusting your strategy in order to minimize the variance that a shuffled deck creates.

Draw poker is a very different game than traditional stud or hold ‘em games. Unlike being stuck with the cards that you are given, you have the option of trading away the cards that you do not want to use for completely random new cards. This is where the true challenge of draw poker arises: how do you determine what the correct trade off is? If you are exchanging three of the five cards with the hopes of hitting a three of a kind, how do you know whether or not playing the hand to its conclusion is in your best interest?

Suppose you are dealt two aces, a 9, a 7, and a 3, all different suits. The situation s pretty clear cut for you, you should exchange the three random cards with the hopes that you will be dealt one or more aces. To see what the correct play for you should be, you need to do some math. You know the location of 5 of the 52 cards in the deck, this means that there are 47 cards you do not know—two of these will improve your hand. Since you will be dealt 3 new cards, you have a 2/47 + 2/46 + 2/45 chance of hitting your hand. This equates to a roughly 13 percent chance of you getting a third ace. Getting some good poker software reviews may help your game a bit as well.

Simple pot odds say that if you are contributing less than 13 percent of the pot, it is correct to play this hand if you have a good suspicion that three aces will win the hand and with only two aces you will lose. The good thing is that often in five card draw a pair of aces will be enough to win, but with this knowledge, you can succeed in more difficult scenarios.

Playing with a short stack can be a trying and frustrating experience. In tournaments where the blinds go up frequently and quickly, being a short stack can be the kiss of death. You are severely limited in your playing power when you have few chips making it easier for your opponents to exploit you. If you are a short stack, the first rule is to not panic. This is easy enough; you just do not play a hand incorrectly because you don’t have a lot of chips. Sticking to basic poker strategy will help you here more than it will hurt you.

The second rule of playing with a short stack at PokerStars.com is to avoid being blinded out. This is a bit more difficult since it sometimes requires a good deal of action on your part. You need to be able to read your opponents much better than they need to read you. It is much harder to bluff an opponent when they have considerably more chips than you do. Even if they have a worse hand, it is often correct for them to value bet their hands if it will knock you out of the tournament. To compensate for this you need to play only premium hands. This is much easier said than done. When blinds are looming near, you need to make a quick decision of whether a seemingly mediocre hand is the best shot you have of winning more chips. Unfortunately, this is something that you can only guess at. A mediocre hand can win big for you, but it can just as easily wipe you out of the tournament.

Some multi-table tournaments at FullTiltPoker.net offer late buy ins in order to accommodate more players. Buying in late is generally a poor decision, since a good player will be wasting opportunities to increase their chip stacks with the longer playing time. Essentially, buying in late is the same as buying in at the tourney’s beginning, and then never playing a hand. The longer a good player is at the table however, the more chips they will win.

The main argument for buying in late is that you will avoid busting out early on in the tournament. This is faulty logic, however. The potential for the chips that you would win far outweighs the chances of busting out early. A decent player does not let themselves become pot committed to a hand that would not win over the course of the long term. What this means for a good player is that they will gain chips during the late registration time far more often than they would lose chips—given a large enough sampling. Buying in late then, is essentially putting yourself at a disadvantage.

The disadvantage is not a large one, though. If you are lucky, buying in late will not cause you harm. Still, if at all possible it should be avoided since that small disadvantage that you are given can be enough for you to stand the chance of losing money should you repeatedly buy in late to tournaments.

Oftentimes, in tournament play you will be unsure of how to proceed. Perhaps a puzzling hand has been dealt, or maybe an opponent is acting in a quizzical manner. If you have to stop and think of the correct way to play your hand, do not be afraid to do so. Not every hand is going to be easy to play, nor will every move you should make come instantly to you. If you need time, take it.

With that said, in tournament play, there are some general rules of thought to be aware of when it comes to hands that you are uncertain about. If the blinds are relatively low and you are unsure of how to proceed, you should fold the hand. If the blinds are high, you should play the hand more aggressively by betting or raising.

The thought process for this is as follows: if you’re unsure and the blinds are low, you probably have a marginal hand. At this stage in the game, you do not want to press your luck unless you are certain that you are going to stand a good chance of winning. Because you need to put so much thought into it, the odds are that your hand is not a premium one and you will be needlessly throwing money away. Fold the hand—blinds are small and you do not stand to win as much as you do to lose.

If the blinds are high however, the story changes drastically. Because more people will be playing tightly, it becomes correct to play marginal hands since you are much more likely to steal the blinds right out from under your opponents.
